Developmental & Stem Cell Biology

Studies of the mechanisms by which organisms grow and develop is one of the central missions of the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology. Normal organismal development requires the intricate coordination of cell growth and differentiation, together with tissue patterning and morphogenesis. Self-renewing populations of stem cells, which can give rise to multiple different cell types, play crucial roles in these processes.
